Feeding Northern Arizona’s Future (FNAZF) is a volunteer based 501(c)(3) which directly impacts children here in Flagstaff, Winslow, & Williams. Currently there are between 1,500 and 2,000 elementary age students here who have little or no food on the weekends. Their main source of food is provided by the school at breakfast and lunch. We provide food to the schools on Thursday to be put discreetly into the kid’s backpacks for the weekend. Our food bags have 6 meals and a few snacks. We really work hard to provide a lot of food and keep the cost as low as possible, it costs us $200 per school year to feed each kid. Even though food should be a right it seems to be viewed as a privilege, one that we disagree with. This is very important to Flagstaff and Northern Arizona primarily because of the statistics that support programs like ours. Kids who participate in programs such as ours have an increase in math test scores by 23%, reading tests scores improve by 30% and absenteeism and behavioral issues decrease by 40%. These children are our future, so if food will brighten their stars then we need to do everything we can to ensure that they get that opportunity. Our mission is to provide food to all of the kids in Flagstaff, and eventually all of Northern Arizona who suffer from hunger on the weekends.
